Opinion

Stop trying to pick the one best AI model

Every few months a new model tops the leaderboards, and every few months teams re-open the same debate: should we switch? The debate is the mistake. The teams getting the most from AI stopped trying to crown a single winner and started routing each task to the model that fits it. A “best model” decision made in January is stale by March, but a workspace that treats models as interchangeable stays current by default.

Why the single-model bet keeps failing

Model quality is not one axis. One model writes the cleanest prose, another reasons more carefully through multi-step problems, a third is dramatically cheaper for routine summarisation, and a fourth handles images natively. Benchmarks compress all of that into a single number, and the number hides exactly the differences your team feels day to day.

Committing to one vendor also means inheriting their bad weeks: outages, quiet capability regressions, pricing changes. When switching costs are high (retraining staff, rewriting integrations, migrating history), teams put up with a worse tool because the alternative is a migration project.

What routing by task looks like in practice

In a multi-model workspace the choice happens per conversation, not per procurement cycle. Drafting a customer email? A fast, inexpensive model is plenty. Working through a legal clause or an architecture decision? Switch to a reasoning-focused model mid-conversation without losing context. Analysing a screenshot or a scanned document? Pick one that is genuinely multimodal.

ChatLite ships OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, Mistral, DeepSeek, and xAI Grok in one interface, so the switch is a dropdown, not a decision memo. Conversation history, files, and integrations stay put; only the engine changes.

The governance angle nobody mentions

The usual counterargument is that standardising on one vendor is simpler to govern. In practice the opposite happens: when the approved tool is mediocre at a task, people quietly use an unapproved one that is better, and now sensitive data lives in an account nobody audits. Offering the strong model for each job inside one governed workspace (same guardrails, same audit trail, same access controls regardless of vendor) is what actually keeps usage in one place.

How to move without a big migration

You do not need to rip anything out. Start by identifying the three or four task types your team actually does (drafting, analysis, research, coding), and note where the current tool underperforms. Then trial a multi-model workspace on the weakest one. The win usually shows up in the first week, and the leaderboard debate simply stops mattering: when the next impressive model ships, you add it to the roster instead of re-running procurement.
